As collecting money is of no use to Allah Almighty. Rather, doing good deeds and a Muslim following the divine command while avoiding prohibitions is the goal and purpose.
  • A Muslim must realize that immortality can only be in the afterlife. He must strive for it by doing good deeds that please Allah Almighty.
    Since neither money, nor children, nor anything else can last in this world. Accumulating money and having many children should not affect the character of a Muslim, and he should work like a person who thinks he is safe and far from death. Rather, the Muslim must have these things make him more thankful to Allah Almighty, and work to increase his certainty in Allah.

  • Allah Almighty began the verses of Surah Al Humazah with a strongly worded threat of woe. Where Allah Almighty said in His verses, “Woe to every hamza.” There is also a big difference between hamza and lamaz.
  • Hamza indicates mockery and belittlement of other people. This is done by using signs and body language in general.
  • When a Muslim belittles and degrades others by calling him some derisive names. This action is called lamaz, and lamaz can also combine signs and words.
  • Ibn Zaid believes that a slanderer is a person who scorns others with his hand as if he is hitting them. As for the blameworthy person, he is the person who criticizes others with his tongue.
  • There is another interpretation of the meaning of the hamza, meaning that it is a person who eats the flesh of others while they are not present.
    The specific meaning of lamaz is to criticize them, and there are many meanings of hamza and lamaz. But what is meant is that Allah Almighty warns the Muslim against harming others or belittling their status.

  • A Muslim individual must not be deceived by the money he possesses, as the final fate of all creatures is death. Also, money cannot make a person immortal in this world.
  • The verses of Surah Humazah condemned the miserly person and the one who works to collect money. He enumerates it without sacrificing anything for the sake of Allah Almighty.
  • Allah has warned every person who thinks that his money will immortalize him in this world with burning fire. From which he will not be able to escape in the afterlife.
  • The verses of Surah Al Humzah confirm that pride in money is one of the doors to ruin. This is because it is necessary for a person to work hard in order to perform the good deeds that will remain for him. It benefits him in good deeds without his first and last burden being collecting money.

The reason for the revelation of Surat Al Humazah

Every surah in the Holy Quran has a reason for its revelation that differs from the reason for the rest of the surahs. As for the reason for the revelation of Surah Humazah, it has many sayings, which are:

  • The first opinion is that some scholars say that Surat Al Humazah was revealed about a man who was called “Al-Akhnas bin Shurayq.” It is said that he used to gossip a lot and gossip about others.
    He also used to curse every person, big and small, a lot. Especially the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
  • There is another opinion that says that Surah Humazah was revealed about Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah, the father of the great companions, the unsheathed sword of Allah, Khalid bin Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah. And Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah, who always backbited the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, during his absence. 
  • There are some opinions that say that Surah Al Humazah was revealed about Umayyah bin Khalaf, and Allah is Most High and Most Knowing.

Lessons learned from Surah Humazah

There are some lessons that we must learn from him in that Surah, which are:

  • We must learn from Surah Humazah to avoid mocking others. In addition to not belittling them or calling them names they do not like. They should not be insulted or belittled.
    You should also beware of people who think they are better than others. It must be emphasized that credit among people can only be achieved through good deeds.
  • This surah is a divine warning to people who insult others.
  • The verses of Surath Al Humazah make it clear that these matters would spread violence within society.
    In addition, it spreads hatred and malice. Therefore, Allah threatens those who commit these things with severe punishment.
  • The Surah also revealed the nature of the fire that will consume every disobedient to Allah and every unbeliever. Everyone is proud of his money at the expense of others.
