What is Surah Falaq?
Surah Falaq ( سورة الفلق ) is the 113th surah in the Quran. This surah has only 5 verses making it one of the shortest surahs in the Quran such as Surah Al-Kautsar (3 verses), and Surah Al-Ikhlas (4 verses).
It comes from Makiyyah and was revealed after Surah Al-Fiil. “Falaq” means “the whole being” or some commentators explain it as “dawn time”.
This surah is also known as surah Muawwizatain. Surah Falaq together with Surah An-Nas are two surahs that contain a request for protection (Muawwizatain), It is categorized as a surah that has the highest position among other surahs.
The verses in Surah Falaq teach us to seek protection from Allah SWT from all evils whether humans, jinns, devils, poisonous or wild animals, other creatures, evil sins, lust, and any bad practice.
Advantages of Surah Falaq

1. An incomparable surah
Prophet Muhammad SAW said: “Have you not seen the verses that were revealed this night that have never been compared. Those verses are ‘Qul A’uzdu Birabbil Falaq’ (Al-Falaq) and ‘Qul A’udzu Birabbin Naas’ (An-Nas).” – (Hadith of Muslim History).
2. Surah that is very loved by Allah
The Prophet SAW said: ” Recite ‘Qul A’uzdu Birabbil Falaq’ (Al-Falaq) because you cannot read any surah that is very loved by Allah SWT and very quickly accepted by Allah SWT, like this surah. So if you can afford it, don’t leave it.”
3. Surah that is very quickly accepted by Allah
Mentioned in another narration, the Messenger of God SAW said: ” You cannot read anything that is very fast reaching Allah SWT like ‘Qul A’udzu Birabbil Falaq’ (Al-Falaq).”
4. Provides protection from being bewitched
Taking a lesson from the story of the Prophet SAW who was bewitched by the Jewish man shows that the advantage of Surah Falaq is when we want to ask for protection from external things such as magic.
5. Avoid anxiety
The handling of magic that the Prophet once received was so great that it caused him to feel apprehensive, especially involving acts of worship. This caused his Majesty to think that he had done some worship, when he had not done it yet.
Imam Jalaluddin al-Mahali mentioned that the magic sent to him was tied through a bowstring with 11 ties. Then, God gave guidance about the magic by revealing Surah Falaq as a recitation of protection.
6. Used in ruqyah treatment
Ruqyah treatment is one of the alternative treatment methods of Islam using the Al-Quran. Surah Falaq is among the surahs that are read and used to treat patients.
Ibnu Qayyim said, ” Regarding His Majesty’s head that was affected by magic, it is not a disgrace to His Majesty’s infallibility. This is because witchcraft is a disease, that is ‘ain disease and it can befall anyone even the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet SAW suffered from this disease as he suffered from other diseases. (Zaad Al-Ma’ad, 4:113-114)
7. Known as surah Al-Mu’awwizataini
The Prophet SAW once talked about the advantages of Surah Falaq. The Prophet SAW said:
It means: ” There have been revealed to me verses that are not like it, which is Al-Mu’awwizataini” (Surah An-Nas and Surah AlFalaq).” – (Hadith Narrated by Muslim, no: 814, At-Tirmidhi, no: 2827, An Naasa’I, no: 944).
8. It is recommended to read after salam
From Uqbah bin Amir, he said;
The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, commanded me to recite the Mu’awwidhat after every prayer.
Means: “The Prophet SAW ordered me to read Muawwizaat at the end of the prayer (after greetings).” – (Hadith History. An Nasai no. 1336 and Abu Daud no. 1523. Shaykh Al Albani said that this hadith is valid).
9. Strengthen people’s confidence to believe in God and supernatural things
‘ain disease is caused by the sight of the eyes accompanied by the nature of envy and a sense of wonder to the person seen. Starting from the look of the eyes, it can tend to bewitch others.
From Abu Hurairah RA, the Prophet SAW said: Verily the sight of the eyes is true.” – (Hadith Narrated by Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daud, al-Tirmizi and Ahmad)
10. As healing and curing diseases
The advantage of Surah Falaq is very good as a natural remedy for those who are sick, especially for mystical diseases and ethereal beings.
