Surah Al Lail

This surah is Makki, the place of its revelation was in Makkah, and the number of its verses is 21 verses.

It is located within the surahs of the sixth quarter of the thirtieth part of the Holy Quran, and it ranks number 92 in the order of the surahs of the Qur’an.

Surah Al Lail is classified as Surah Al Mufassal, and its number of verses is twenty-one.

In addition to being one of the surahs in which the name of His Majesty is not mentioned, the revelation of Surah al Lail to the Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was immediately after Surah Al Ala and before Surah Al Fajr.

The beginning of the surah comes with the oath style, in His saying, the Almighty, “And the night when it covers,” as do most of the surahs of Juz Amma that begin with the oath style, such as the surahs of Al-Ghashiya, Al-Tariq, Al-Duha, and others.

Reason for Revelation

As we mentioned previously, Surah Al Lail begins with the Almighty’s saying, “By the night when it covers,” and from here the name came.

As Allah Almighty swore by one of the natural phenomena in this universe, which is the night, it is a time of rest, tranquility, and sleep for all creatures, including humans.

This is in order to point out the importance of the night for a person after his effort throughout the day and the effort and fatigue he receives in it, the impact of which will be reflected on him in this world and the hereafter.

There are a group of narrations contained in the reasons for the revelation of Surah Al Lail, the most important of which are the following:

It is stated in most of the narrations and by the consensus of scholars that the reason for the revelation of this Surah was Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may God be pleased with him.

This is because of his unprecedented spending on Muslims, and his freeing of Muslim slaves from his own money in support of Islam and Muslims.

Among this is that Abu Bakr wanted to buy the companion Bilal bin Rabah, who was a slave of the polytheist Umayyah bin Khalaf, so he wanted to buy him with a garment and ten full ounces of gold.

So Allah Almighty revealed the verses from the beginning of Surah Al Lail until His Almighty saying: “Indeed, your effort will be varied.”

The mention of sa’i here is a reference to the sa’i of both Abu Bakr and Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and there is a difference between the two actions.

It was stated in another narration that the reason for the revelation of Surah Al Lail was because Abu Bakr al-Siddiq’s father was blaming his son Abu Bakr because of his eagerness to free the slaves of Muslims and his spending a lot of money for that. Where Abu Bakr’s father said: “My son, if you buy someone who will hold your back”.

Abu Bakr replied to him, saying: “I do not want someone who will hold your back,” meaning that the goal of freeing slaves is to support Islam and Muslims. So Allah Almighty revealed: “And the most pious will avoid it. He is the one who gives his wealth as a purity, and no one with Him has a blessing that can be rewarded, except seeking the face of his Lord, the Most High, and he will be satisfied.”
